Unethical practices in research and publication

Not a secret that this is happening but we don't have proof:
  1. Pay The Genius to be co-author.
  2. Pay for citation. Former students say that one particular academis staff offered to pay students RM200 to cite his papers.
  3. There are a few academic staff who buy equipment via their own company - meaaning grant money end up in their pocket.

How true is this? To know true or not, someone must investigate. We don't have power to go check other people's personal bank account!

One academic staff told his students to write papers but not include his name in paper (self-citation doesn't count). That paper cites many his other papers. This is his strategy to get a lot of citation and get promotion quickly. This is one of his paper. He said that UM top management said nothing wrong with his strategy.

UM is so chronic ranking crazy - can do whatever so that ranking goes up. The end justifies the means.

Do you agree with this strategy? If agree, we don't have to cite each other. Just tell your student to write a paper (don't include your name) and cite your 10 other papers. If you have 5 students, you get 50 citations already. Marvellous, right?

  2. Admin patut cuba memahami yang kami sebenarnya terdesak dan terpaksa bayar utk publish. Kalau tidak kami tidak memenuhi KPI, tidak akan ditetapkan dalam perkhidmatan Dan dinaikkan pangkat. Kami sebenarnya desperate... Cubalah faham Dan jangan judgemental...

  3. It all boils down to your own conscience. The opportunities to work against the system is always there, but if you think of the longer term repercussions: the money you make out of less than ethical ways, promotions that result from
These practices and using this money to feed your family. The repercussions extend till the hereafter. That's what stops other good people from doing this. The end never justifies any means if it involves cheating and lying.

  5. I've to agree with headdamage. I believe Anonymous who says that we're desperate, is a Muslim (judging from the language). Don't get me wrong, I'm a Malay Muslim as well... and a junior academic....
(but even if he/she is not Muslim, all religions preach truth and honesty.... not sure about Scientology tho :-P )

For people with religion, KPI or no KPI, we want our bounty (rezeqi) to be halal, and have barakah (blessings, I think is the right translation). So, wanting promotion thru such means is so so bad and wrong, and not even in line with religion.

Being Muslims, work/play/pray/eat/drink/sleep/driving/cycling/nightly-activity-with-spouse/hiking/and not to mention academic writing.... all of these must be rooted in our religion. Hecks, we even have doas (prayers, yg jenis angkat tangan dan aminnn tu) for ALL of these activities.... Therefore, we ALWAYS have an option to NOT FOLLOW THE TREND (wrong trend some more!) and rely on God for our success (of course, after putting in the effort... no free lunch, even from God :P ... well, most of the time) Moreover, we have been taught that rezqi comes from Allah (an Arabic word meaning the One God) and hence we must strive our very best to do it the right way!!!

This is not a moment of DARURAT (emergency).... the pressure to get PROMOTED is NOT a state of DARURAT... So I beg Anonymous not to use his/her argument to justify the end of the road....

BTW, I don't the the admin/author of this blog is talking about pay to publish, as in paid journals. That's another story, and can many times still be ethical. It's about PAYING people to cite ure work... which is totally wrong, and not to mention, a sin....

Anywayz, in all, the all true thing is Wallahualam (GOd knows best!)

Keep up the good work admin!!!
